In just a few days it would have been Ollie’s 20th birthday, so I wanted to put down into words some of my thoughts and memories of my friend and one of our founding members of staff.
I had known Ollie all of his life and he was very much part of my extended family. I was lucky enough to have been able to be part of his life while he grew into a kind and gentle young man.
When the opportunity came for him to leave school and start work I was really pleased to help him start his career in software development at Purple Tuesday, so he began working with us as an IT Apprentice. He was showing great promise and had quickly become a valuable member of the Tech Team, I was immensely proud of him.
On 19th July 2014 though he was sadly taken from us having suddenly contracted Meningitis, he was just 18 years old.
I know I can speak for Seb, Stefan and Matt too when I say that losing Ollie was a truly horrible, heart-breaking experience. There’s not a day that goes by when he’s not in our thoughts.
A business depends on the commitment and teamwork of the staff at all levels. Staff come and go but when one of the team is taken unexpectedly in such tragic circumstances the strength of that team is tested.
I really feel that as our business grows and new people join us on that journey, it’s important we acknowledge the contribution Ollie made in setting the foundations. When a business is just starting up, those few individuals that set the direction have an enormous impact for years to come.
As a tribute to Ollie we always close the office on his birthday, 22nd December to reflect on how precious and fleeting life can be and remind ourselves that every day should be lived to the full.
